Mr. Georges Michelson-Dupont, Trustee
Urantia Foundation
533 Diversey Parkway
Chicago, IL 60614
Dear Georges,
Thank you for your letter of January 21, 2000, concerning a meeting between
The Fellowship and Urantia Foundation. As in past meetings, we have assumed
that this meeting would be between the five Trustees of the Foundation and
an equal number of members of The Fellowship's Executive Committee. Since
only the five Trustees, acting as a body, can speak authoritatively for Urantia
Foundation, we believe it is essential that all five Trustees of Urantia Foundation
attend this meeting.
You suggest we meet in Paris at the end of February. Although we would need
more time to prepare for a meeting in Paris, we are willing to travel in order
to discuss these issues with all five Trustees. We would need 45-60 days to
secure travel documents and reasonable airfares, as well as a guarantee of
two or three days with all five Trustees to ensure a productive meeting. As
an alternative to having nine people travel to Paris, we could arrange to
meet in Chicago following one of your scheduled events this spring, or at
some other time, perhaps in connection with one of your trips to New York.
I await your call to discuss venue, date, and an agenda for the proposed meeting.
The Fellowship and Urantia Foundation entered into a mutually beneficial contract
on February 9, 1999, which licensed The Fellowship to display The
Urantia Book and its translations on its web site. Since that time we
have relied on the good faith of Urantia Foundation and made a substantial
investment to enable the electronic display of these texts on our web site.
Thousands of visitors to The Fellowship web site have become accustomed to
using these resources. Although we are displaying the inviolate text per our
agreement, we have also made a number of technical adjustments in order to
provide search capabilities for these texts. The features we have added are
valuable to the readers who use our web site, and do not violate our agreement.
You have stated that Urantia Foundation has recently changed its web site
license policy, and that the license now specifically excludes translations.
Apart from your letter, we have no official confirmation from Urantia Foundation
of such changes. We do note that the web site license policy statement has
been removed from the Foundation's web site and replaced by a statement that
the policies are under review; but there is no indication of a new policy.
We have entered into an agreement, which is binding on both organizations,
even if Urantia Foundation chooses to treat new web sites differently. The
Fellowship has invested substantial effort and resources based on the web
site license policy it accepted from Urantia Foundation. It is not reasonable
to attempt to project current changes in your licensing policies onto our
existing contract. We have conformed fully and in good faith to the requirements
of our license, which we believe remains in effect as originally established.
If you disagree with our views in this matter, that is something we can discuss
when we meet. Again, Georges, since only the Trustees are empowered to speak
authoritatively for Urantia Foundation we believe that all five Trustees must
be present at the meeting to facilitate resolution of our disagreements.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Janet Farrington Graham
