Urantia Foundation Statement
Re: Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Ruling
(Memo sent to Urantia Foundation E-mail list)
The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that
the Urantia Foundation's copyright in The Urantia Book is valid. This June
10, 1997 decision reverses a judgement of the United States District Court
for the District of Arizona. While we believe that this is a proper and
wise ruling, it will take some time to study its meaning and implications
and particularly to chart a course embodying the best group wisdom which
can be mustered. Clearly, this is a complicated and important process,
and it would not be wise to rush decisions. With or without the copyright,
the object for which the Foundation was created and the duties of the Trustees
of Urantia Foundation remain unchanged as they have since the creation
of the Urantia Foundation in 1950. We thank those of you who have given
us your support during these difficult years and we ask all of you for
your prayers, your patience, and your input.
