Emma Christensen's Brief History of The Urantia Book
Transcript of a talk given by Emma L. Christensen
Vancouver, BC, July 1979

The Declaration of Trust creating Urantia Foundation was filed for record on January 11, 1950. The Foundation created thereby is a non-profit and tax exempt organization.

With the Foundation acting as publisher, a Urantia Book was published under international copyright on October 12, 1955. A sum of money in excess of $49,000 was contributed for this purpose.

It is the primary duty of the Trustees to perpetually preserve inviolate the text of The Urantia Book. The Trustees must use and employ such means, methods and facilities as in their judgment shall be necessary and prepare for preserving and safeguarding the original text of The Urantia Book. The Trustees of the Urantia Foundation must retain absolute and unconditional control of all plates and other media for printing and reproduction of The Urantia Book or any translation thereof.

The Foundation holds the copyright to The Urantia Book as well as the trademark, the three concentric circles, and the use of the word Urantia.

In order to disseminate the teachings and doctrines of The Urantia Book, it was inevitable that some sort of social and fraternal organization should come into existence. In 1952, a group of Urantia believers assembled in Chicago to begin the process of preparing such an organization. This group composed the Charter membership of Urantia Brotherhood. The original founders of the Urantia Brotherhood directed the organization for the first nine years.

Thereafter, the Brotherhood was governed by a new General Council selected by the action of a Triennial Delegate Assembly composed of delegates from the various Urantia Societies. The first Triennial Meeting was held during 1964.

Since the Urantia Brotherhood is not a corporation -- not a legal entity -- the Executive Committee caused to be organized a not-for-profit organization under the laws of the State of Illinois in the name of Urantia Brotherhood Corporation. The Corporation acts as the fiscal agent of the Brotherhood taking care of the various financial and legal interests of the Brotherhood.

The manuscripts for the text were completed in 1935.

During the years 1935 to 1955, the Brotherhood Officers and its voluntary helpers (there was no paid staff in those early days) engaged in proof-reading galleys of the printed page of the manuscript of The Urantia Book which had then been completed. This took many years.

After completing the galleys, pagination was prepared for the printers. Page proofs were then proof-read and the final page proofs sent to the printer to begin the printing of The Urantia Book as it is now constituted. We were also engaged in preparing the cover with the assistance of our printers. This proved an arduous task and took many months.

During this period also the Forum was meeting regularly, and we had a Wednesday evening study group going.

Many hours were spent soliciting funds for the first printing.

The Constitution of the Urantia Brotherhood was also in preparation and the time of its finalization covered many months. Plans for the Urantia Brotherhood School were also being studied, but the school did not open until September, 1956.

The printers, of course, required many months for completing the printing and when the book had been completed, the finalization of all of this important work was then put aside waiting for the word to proceed with the completion of the job readying the Book for sale.

The Urantia Book was finally published on October 12, 1955.
