Note from Mindy Williams to manager of Brasilian website:
Dear
Webmaster,
From your website it appears that we share the common goal of
isseminating the teachings of The Urantia Book to the world. May we ask that you
cooperate with Urantia Foundation in your efforts? The Trustees of Urantia Foundation
are entrusted with responsibility for helping to uplift the peoples of our planet
through the teachings found in The Urantia Book. As much as possible, we do this
in cooperation with the many people around the world who have discovered the book
and are interested in helping to spread the information they have learned.
One
of the duties of the Trustees is to publish the inviolate text of The Urantia
Book and to maintain control over the reproduction of the text and the translations
of the book. The copyright and the trademarks “Urantia,” “Urantian,” and the Concentric-Circles
Symbol serve to identify the publications and services of Urantia Foundation around
the world. The copyright laws give Urantia Foundation the exclusive right to publish
translations.
As you may be aware, a team of translators in Brazil is working
on behalf of Urantia Foundation to translate the book into Portuguese. Others
in Brazil are working cooperatively with Urantia Foundation to create websites
and other works. If you are interested in assisting with any of these projects,
please let us know. It is our hope that we may be united as we seek to present
the teachings to Portuguese-speaking people.
However, we respectfully request
that you refrain from using Urantia and the Concentric-Circles Symbol on your
website because these are registered trademarks of Urantia Foundation. If this
is a personal website of na individual, there are certain uses permitted by Urantia
Foundation’s policies, available in English on their website at
http://www.urantia.org/policies_personal_use.html. (If you
do not read English, please let me know and I will attempt to translate relevant
sections of the policies.) The use of “Urantia” and the Concentric-Circles Symbol
on your website is likely to cause confusion because Urantia Foundation uses these
to identify its publications and services in Brazil and all around the world.
In
addition, we respectfully request that you remove the Portuguese translation of
papers from The Urantia Book from your website. This is an infringement of the
copyright in The Urantia Book.
We are very much in support of the kinds
of outreach and educational work that can be done via the Internet, and we encourage
your efforts along these lines. We simply ask that you refrain from using the
trademarks "Urantia," "Urantian," and the Concentric-Circles Symbol and that you
remove the unauthorized translation of material from The Urantia Book from your
website. May we have your cooperation in this?
I look forward to discussing
these matters with you further. If you would prefer to discuss this by telephone
please give me your telephone number and let me know a good time to call. Our
representative Luiz Carlos Dolabella Chagas has offered to assist with translating
as needed. He is also the person to speak with concerning activities in Brazil.
Luiz can be reached at the email address shown above.
In friendship,

Additional
note from Mindy Williams to manager of Brasilian website:
Hello,
We
wrote to you recently about your website. We have not received any
response
from you, and our representative in Brazil has contacted
vila.bol.com.br to
notify them this website infringes the copyright and
trademarks of Urantia
Foundation. It appears they have shut down the site
because of this infringement.
We
still hope you will consider working to make resources available in
Portuguese
in ways that do not interfere with the responsibilities entrusted
to Urantia
Foundation of publishing the Urantia Book and its translations.
We would like
to discuss this with you and invite you to contact me.
