QUARTERLY NEWS LETTER FROM
THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE Urantia BROTHERHOOD
TO THE GENERAL COUNCIL AND OTHER INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS
February 15, 1960

The annual meeting of the General Council was held January 24, 1960, at 533 Diversey Parkway. Attached is a roster of the General Council indicating three newly elected Council members and nine departmental committee members in accordance with the Urantia Brotherhood Constitution. Also attached is the annual report of the Treasurer.

President Warren H. Kulieke presented a very fine report, wherein, among other things, he summarized the long-range purpose of the Urantia Brotherhood; its immediate goals; and the value and significance of the Brotherhood organization. He stated, as expressed in Article II of the Constitution: "The purposes of Urantia Brotherhood are the study and dissemination of the teachings of the Urantia Book; the promotion, improvement, and expansion among the peoples of the world of the comprehension and understanding of Cosmology and the relation of the planet on which we live to the Universe; of the genesis and destiny of Man; and his relation to God; and of the teachings of Jesus Christ." A partial fulfillment of these purposes is evidenced by the chartering of four Societies. In discussing immediate goals, the President pointed out that the Brotherhood is trying to put the book in the hands of as many people as possible; the Urantia Brotherhood School is functioning; a French translation is in process. He pointed out the value and significance of the Brotherhood organization in that, while its important function is to carry out long-range and immediate goals, it has still another important function in that it must safeguard this revelation.

Each departmental committee chairman and the officers made reports on their activities in 1959, most of which have already been reported in prior news letters.

The Judicial Committee reported that it is working on manuals which will reflect the Constitution and By-Laws in a more accessible and understandable form for the use of the Brotherhood officers and committee members.

The Fraternal Relations Committee is continuing to acquaint itself with the teachings and activities of the various religious denominations and religions of the world, in order to become prepared to deal intelligently with any problems invovling relations with any and all such organizations, if and when they should arise.

The Charter Committee reported that although no new Societies had been organized during 1959, it has had some inquiries and is hopeful of some new Societies being formed this year. The sample Constitituion for new Societies has been revised.

The Publications and Miscellaneous committees work together in the production of the Quarterly News Letters and in the reproduction of materials for the Urantia Brotherhood School, and many, many jobs too numerous to mention.

The Committee on Education continues its chief responsibility -- the conduct of the Quarterly News letters and in the reproduction of materials for the Urantia Brotherhood School.

The outstanding project completed by the Domestic and Foreign Extension Committees was the production of the brochure enclosed. Additional copies may be obtained by request to headquarters at a cost of 5 cents each. This charge is being made to defray cost of future printing.

The Finance Committee continues to raise enough funds to take care of annual current expenses.

The Urantia Brotherhood School has again completed its first semester's work for the year 1959-1960. With the completion of "Worship and Wisdom", on February 17th, 1960, Dr. William S. Sadler will conduct a new course entitled "The Short Doctrine -- Summary of the Theology of the Urantia Book" as a minor credit. Now is a good time for those students who were unable to complete the long course to enroll for this condensed course in Doctrine. Under Alvin Kulieke, the School has completed the first major unit -- Astronomy -- in Science. The second semester will complete two more major units, namely, Geology, Physics, and Chemistry. Since we are starting a major unit, this is also a good time to enroll for the Science course.

Membership in the four Urantia Societies has increased from 211 to 216, and we have 3 Members-at-Large. If you are an isolated individual who would like to become a Member-at-Large, we shall be most happy to consider your application.

Custodians of the Urantia Book report the number of books released to date as follows: 1955-1,695; 1956-639; 1957-594; 1958-388; 1959-454; a total of 3,770 sold or presented to libraries and individuals. We think this is very good. So far during January of this year 47 have been released.

Although certain Urantia Societies have expressed a wish to know what the other Societies are doing and how they conduct their meetings, etc., requests to Societies have not produced much information. However, we do have to report from the West Coast Society as follows: (Their situation is different from most other Socieities as their members are widely scattered). They hold four Governing Comittee meetings and four Society meetings a year, which they hold on the same day. Their Society meetings are social, business, intellectual, and spiritual. They have seven small study groups at which they read and discuss papers, and at which outsiders are welcome. They want to have a school and have established an Education Committee. They have devised a test on "The Life and Teachings of Jesus", which they recommend for study use rather than as a test. You may have a copy of such test free by writing to Mrs. William Z. Fenderson, 3638 Bagley Ave., Los Angeles 34, California.

The following teaching aids for your study groups are still available: Doctrine of Theology - Volume I, II, III, IV, at $5.00 each; Teachings of Jesus at $5.50; Worship and Wisdom, at $5.00; Science, Volume I, at $2.50; The Short course in Doctrine, at $3.00.

Pins and lapel buttons are available at $3.50 and may be ordered through the Secretary of your local Society. If you are not a member of a Society, you may write direct to the Secretary-General at Chicago.

We have been asked to remind all members of local Urantia Societies to notify the Secretary of their Society of any change of address or phone number. It is important that each Society keep its membership records accurate and up to date.
