THE CHURCH AND THE Urantia BOOK

Expanded knowledge and insight have always been difficult for society to assimilate.  The church being an institution which emphasizes its historic confessional roots and promotes homogeneous fellowship, has had considerable difficulty adjusting to new frames of reference.  The Urantia Book, although presenting a message solidly rooted in the Judeo-Christian heritage, and enhancing the highest concepts in these traditions, does present an enlarged view of the universe and God.  Therefore, it poses a threat as well as a revitalizing and enriching potential for the church.

It is important to remember that growth for both individuals and institutions is an evolutionary process.  Light can blind as well as guide. Truth which is presented prematurely brings frustration and rejection.  Pastors who are inspired by the great truths of The Urantia Book should be careful not to thrust the book on to individuals or congregations before they are ready for it.  Most parishioners at this point in time are not prepared to read the book, but they will welcome its liberating spiritual insights, when translated into the idiom and reference frame I which their faith finds expression.  It is wise, therefore, to use these insightful concepts to enrich sermons, teaching, and ministry without presenting the book prematurely.  Concepts parallel to the truths in The Urantia Book are found in the writings of existential, Tillichian, and process theology, humanistic psychology, and contemporary science.

The Urantia Book wishes to support, encourage, and strengthen all religious institutions toward the fulfillment of their unique potentials in ministering to the spiritual needs of humanity.  We must use wisdom, therefore, to assure that the book serves as a blessing, rather than a stumbling block to the church.
