MICROLENSING

(1) Normally observers see only the light rays coming directly from the distant star.

(2) As the invisible star passes in front, it blocks the central light ray. But gravity
bends nearby rays making the distant star appear to brighten.

(3) After the invisible star moves on, observers once again see only the central
star. The distant star's brightness returns to normal.
