DO'S AND DON'TS OF
FAMILY MEETINGS
Buk and Arlene Weimer
IC05
Do's:
Start on time.
Attendance is voluntary.
Make decisions even if it affects absent members.
Parents must abide by decisions.
Always make at least one consensus decision per meeting (even
if that decision is "We agree, we have nothing to decide."
Keep to the time-limit of meetings - short at first (15 minutes,
eventually 30-45 minutes).
Chairman adds to discussion only after all others have had their
say.
Parents must persevere - stick with it, through thick and thin for
at least a year.
Parents must be consistent with meetings, meeting times, and
following through with decisions.
Don'ts:
One or both parents dominate.
Parents use meetings as a forum to manipulate the children.
Meetings don't take place on time.
One of the parents avoid attending.
Decisions are not upheld.
Family members become discouraged when consensus is not
reached immediately.
Chairman allows a family member to be negative about
someone else's idea (If one member does not like an idea
presented by another, they must present an alternative idea.)
Allow a family member to sabotage the meetings.
