The Greeks maintained statues of their gods in these niches where the Jordan river flows from the base of Mt. Hermon.  There are scholars who believe that Peter's comment following the transfiguration about erecting three tents, one for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah, reflects this custom of erecting monuments to the Gods at places deemed sacred.
